Program text

The musical guises of composer Oliver Coates are many: from classical cellist in the context of the London Contemporary Orchestra to a Radiohead collaborator or an electronic producer. Moreover, he has refined the cello into an alienated sound source for variations atop electronic club sounds. Here, the whirr and rattle of nervous beats, while Coates appropriates diverse repetitive patterns and inserts shimmers of Arvo Pärt or Arthur Russell references. There, electronic experiments dip into IDM only to evolve into the realm of broken beats.
