Founded in 1991, Stilluppsteypa (Helgi Thorsson, Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson) originally started out as a garage-rock band in Reykjavik. Soon enough though they put their guitars aside, only holding on to the DIY-spirit from their punk past and their appreciation for carnevalesque breaks on their way towards electronic music. Responsible for this change of direction was, among others, the psycho-acoustician Andrew McKenzie (aka Hafler Trio), who heavily influenced the experimental music scene in Iceland in the 1990s.
In Krems, Stilluppsteypa will expand their live set into a collective, audiovisual performance together with the field recording experimentalist BJ Nilsen, fine artist Ingólfur Arnarsson and “Iceland Hits Danube” curator Franz Graf, who has been fostering the Austrian-Icelandic friendship for years.
