Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof are not only label colleagues on Kill Rock Stars but have also been engaging in creative exchange for some time – Deerhoof-member Greg Saunier, for example, was involved in some of the albums by the band around Jamie Stewart, also in Xiu Xiu’s latest output, “Dear God, I Hate Myself” (2010).
As part of the donaufestival, the two Californian art-rock bands will join forces and cover Joy Division’s legendary 1979 debut album “Unknown Pleasures” thirty years after its release. One of the most influential British post-punk bands, Joy Division created a novel music vocabulary at the turning point from analogue to digital music production which has had an everlasting influence on popular culture till the present day.
