Ben Frost

“This is Arvo Pärt as arranged by Trent Reznor” – that’s how British music magazine Wire aptly described the compositions of Ben Frost without, however, managing to truly pin down the brute-subtle “classical-meets-popular” sounds of the Australian born in 1980. Because the Icelandic-based multi-instrumentalist, who sees himself as influenced by Phil Collins and approximates the sound of his own music as a “car crash”, defies all common forms of categorisation with his equally physical and cerebral tracks located at breaking point: As at home in dark metal drones as in classic (post-) minimalism, he performs with his live-acts, which are celebrated for their almost spooky intensity, at Berlin’s queer temple of hedonism, Berghain, with the same nonchalance with which he composes scores for contemporary dance theatre or performs in art galleries. On his most recent recording for the Reykjavik Bedroom Community label, “By The Throat” (2009)”, he embeds the musique concrète-like animal sounds of howling wolves and buzzing killer whales in the constantly symphonic and cinematic overall structure. In Krems he will be supported by Shazad Ismaily and Borgar Magnason.
