This voice! You only need to hear the name Carla Bozulich and you
already have it in your ear. Deep, tough and expressive. In an
interview, the musician, who was born in New York in 1965 and grew up in
California, once described her own voice as a “hard rock mountain with a
hot marshmellow center”. It is interesting then that she originally
started out in a genre where her rough-bluesy vocal volume was of no
real use: In the early 1980s, while still a teenager, she was part of
Los Angeles-based post-punk band Neon Vein, in the early 1990s part of
industrial outfit Ethyl Meatplow and then, after a drastic change of
style, head of alternative-country quintet The Geraldine Fibbers. After
the latter had disbanded, the self-proclaimed “worshipper of the drone”
became increasingly interested in avant-garde soundscapes and
improvisation – whether with her duo Scarnella or her solo-project
Evangelista. In 2000, the guitarist and bassist, who has performed with
musicians including Lydia Lunch, Thurston Moore, Wayne Kramer and
Marianne Faithful, developed her first context-dependent performance
titled “Eyes for Eyes”: Guests were invited to a “fake party” at the
Schindler House in L.A. where they were taken to different rooms and
could watch their hostess lip-syncing to old pop records. In Krems,
Carla Bozulich will be playing a performative gig together with artists
from her network and interacting with the architectonic conditions of
the monumental Minoritenkirche.
