DJ Smallcock's Vinyl Rally

Under one of his many aliases, Australian artist Lucas Abela was already a guest at the 2007 edition of the donaufestival with his legendary glass pane performance. Before Patrick Wolf’s performance, he entered the stage as Justice Yeldham and created monstrous walls of sound by pressing his lips onto a glass pane equipped with contact mics and starting to “sing”. The question of who would be stronger, his voice or the glass, was soon answered, as the bursting pane had visibly tortured his face and mouth. Entirely pain-free and, by comparison, playful, he will this year present himself as DJ Smallcock. And that during the entire festival. With “Vinyl Arcade”, the radical universalist will design a large-scale installation, uniting sound art, sculpture, video art, new media and competitive sports. In so doing, he will create something like a dream set-up for all grown-up kids: an impressive, participatory movement play set, bringing together a fetish for vinyl, the ambience of a video arcade and the magic and machismo of motor sports in a video game that is played out in the real world. On the racetrack, which is made from used vinyls, he lets us drive remote controlled cars equipped with record needles on the chassis. However, we’re not only controlling the movements and speed of our cars, but – and that’s the secret plan of the iconoclast of sound – also the parameters of the sound we’re incidentally also producing. Since only two players at a time will be able to compete with each other in hall 3, the former backstage area, you’d better make sure you register early enough with the master and his team.
