An experiment in improvised live animation is what London-based
German-Japanese artist couple Max Hattler and Noriko Okaku calls its
audiovisual performance /\/\/\ (pronounced: ‘hahaha’). Against a
soundtrack by Rich Keyworth, Okaku’s drawn animation and Hattler’s
graphically orientated aesthetic merge to produce semi-narrative
reference systems culminating in an emotional tour de force between
melancholy, horror and salvation. The work was named Best Audiovisual
Performance at the Video Festival in Bochum and has been adapted for the
big screen expressly for the donaufestival. Hattler and Okaku, who
currently rank among the most sought-after young visual artists, have
presented their amazing and breathtaking projects throughout the world
in clubs as well as in museums and at festivals. The just under
40-minute performance will be combined with the exceptional animation
films from the two Royal College of Arts graduates and current
“artists-in-residency” of the short film festival, VIS Vienna
Independent Shorts.
