Youngster Ross Birchard, aka Hudson Mohawke, hails from Glasgow. This is worth pointing out because the picturesque Scottish metropolis, which above all became known for its jingle-jangling guitar bands, meanwhile also boasts a lively techno and house scene centred around label Soma and weekly club night Optimo (Espacio). Much like the latter, beat-nerd Mohawke also only mixes seemingly incommensurable ingredients. His first full-length album, “Butter”, was not only a novelty, it also defied classification. Aqua-crunk, wonky or bit-crush were the terms invented in an attempt to classify the music produced by the once youngest finalist of a DMC battle in the UK. With modified sound effects from games consoles, techno-style banging, hi-tech funk, neon-R&B and incredibly damaged beats, he designs a – avant-gardistically speaking – never-before-heard future music. Apparently, he was even approached to work as producer on the last Michael Jackson album. Could there be a higher accolade?
