Laurie Anderson performing Transitory Life

On the occasion of last year’s release of the album “Homeland”, theoretician Nina Power called multimedia artist Laurie Anderson “the (modulated) voice of America’s conscience” in The Wire magazine. On her latest album, the electric violinist, who has worked with John Cage, Philipp Glass and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and in her film, “Home of the Brave”, could even get William S. Burroughs to dance a slow tango with her, once more features well-known illustrious guests, including Kieran Hebdan of Four Tet-fame, Antony Hegarty, John Zorn and her husband Lou Reed. The concept album, which was ten years in the making, deals with the U.S. of A. after 9/11. Next to macro-disasters, such as global warming, the stock market crash, terror and the criticism of self-proclaimed exportocracy, she also examines supposedly micro-political crises and disasters like defeatism, cynicism and male potency demeanor, but also “reflexive impotence”. Anderson once said in an interview that her main source of inspiration had been been the essay, “Capitalist Realism”, by Mark Fisher, who, following Slavoj Zizek and Frederic Jameson, acts on the assumption that it is easier to imagine the end of the world as opposed to the end of capitalism.
