Lydia Lunch & Band performing “Queen of Siam”

In their groundbreaking anthology, “The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion, and Rock'n'Roll”, music critic couple Joy Press and Simon Reynolds wrote: “Lunch has gotten under the listener's skin by pulling back her own skin to reveal the morbid processes within.” Meaning: Years before Courtney Love became the “most angry woman in rock”, Lydia Lunch, singer for New York no-wave band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, was looking for some heavy confrontation in a baby doll dress. With her debut album, “Queen of Siam”, on legendary label ZE, she also confirmed her reputation as queen of the New York underground scene. Between art-rock, spoken word and S/M transgression, she was staging her ideas on sex & violence together with Richard Kern in films “The Right Side Of My Brain” and “Fingered” long before the onset of the post-porn hype. And seven years ago, she made a brilliantly fitting screen appearance in Asia Argento’s film adaptation of JT Leroy’s “The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things”. It will be very exciting to see how the pioneer of subcultural nonconformism will present and surpass her 1979 debut album, “Queen of Siam”, live on stage.
