Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

If he wanted to, Marc Ribot, born 1954 in Newark, New Jersey could easily retire. Because looking at the exceptionally long credits list of his musical collaborations, ranging from his participation in soul punk band The Realtones, as well as the band John Lurie and the Lounge Lizards, which not least through Jim Jarmusch’s films became world famous, and his studio recordings with Elvis Costello, Marianne Faithful, Arto Lindsay, Laurie Anderson, Allen Ginsberg, The Black Keys to jazz, classical and Cuban music as well as scores for films, such as “Everything is Illuminated” or “The Departed”, you might think: alright, he’s done it all. But luckily, this guy just can’t seem to get enough. A few years ago, he started a new band together with the two emerging talents Shahzad Ismaily, who at this year’s donaufestival will also be performing with Rhys Chatham, and Ches Smith, a student of both, Pauline Oliveros and Fred Frith. The band is called Ceramic Dog. They play experimental (post-) punk and live on stage they are a devilish version of what in 2008 became the title of their album on Pi Recordings: “Party Intellectuals”.
