“WE DONT NEED OTHER WORLDS. WE NEED MIRRORS.”
Ben Frost’s interest in unconventional film sounds comes through in his commissioned work for the Unsound Krakow Festival, which will be performed on the second night: On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Stanislaw Lem’s novel “Solaris”, which in 1972 was made into a film by Andrej Tarkovskij, he produced a piece for 29 strings, percussion, prepared piano, guitar and electronics together with Daniel Bjarnason and the Krakow Symphony Orchestra. “Music for Solaris” re-imagines the spooky silence of the science-fiction dystopia as a man-machine-sound, accompanied by visual “film manipulations” of the original by none other than Frost’s mentor Brian Eno and Nick Robertson.
