Japan’s Shokuhin Matsuri interprets US footwork as a basis for an upbeat sonic fiction that feeds on the sound aesthetics of arcades. Sometimes unsettlingly chaotic and then sugar-sweet once again, he rearranges samples that follow their own logic, as if they were colourful bonbons gobbled one after the other, each transporting you to a different digital fantasy. Worlds open as twinkling and glittery as the Japanese metropolis of Tokyo itself. Labyrinthine, manifold computer music, hyperreal, slick, and crystalline – between light-footed vaporwave and sci-fi jump-and-run games.
