Recently on the MTV stage: Miley Cyrus twerking. Did she steal a piece of Afro-American culture without copyright, like Elvis once did, and turn it into a redundant pop quote? The appropriation and marketing of minority dance forms has a long tradition, reaching back to the time of the minstrel shows of the nineteenth century, an age marked by slavery, industrialisation, and patriarchy, when contradictions were sung and danced – and modern pop culture emerged on the side. Its lesson: Imitation doesn’t just work in a colonial direction. It can shift into subversion, but also strengthen hegemonic discourses. In Situation mit Doppelgänger director Oliver Zahn and cultural scientist Julian Warner present synchronic dances between hip hop-twerking and shoe-slapping. Who is better? Who is blacker? On the examples of minstrel, pop, and folk dances, they investigate the possibility of appropriation and sweatily contest myths of authenticity and identity. Dance is a virus from outer space in the guise of a cultural history comedy about knotted legs.
