Matana Roberts is the most dauntless and multifarious amongst her contemporary free jazz protagonists. The sax player from Chicago has worked with big bands, small improv ensembles as well as post-rock and noise groups; as a solo artist she subjects her instrument and vocals to electronic effect devices and frames it all with historical field recordings. To date three from the planned 12 chapters are complete from the epic work Coin Coin in which she aims to musically recapitulate 300 years of Afro-American emancipation and cultural history. At donaufestival she can be seen together on stage with the English sound artist Kelly Jayne Jones.
