A medical respirator plays a chord on organ pipes – a fragment from Johannes Brahms’ “A German Requiem” – in a constant automatic rhythm. The activity of the artificial “organ” poses ethical questions: It addresses the free will to act impromptu – ad libitum – and serves as a metaphor for the control that humans have transferred to technology.
