SOUND
Her pseudonym is an Iroquoian expression for “I said”. Nicky Mao, aka Hiro Kone, began her career in San Francisco’s hardcore and DIY scene. Ten years ago, she moved to New York, began experimenting with modular synthesizers and joined artistic forces with Drew McDowall of Coil. Her fourth album, Silvercoat The Throng, sees the experimentation develop into a cohesive form of disturbingly subverted allusions: click-clacking rhythms try to join a techno beat, only to disappear into ethereal soundscapes; melodies unfold and subside into drones. Time is out of whack in this fascinatingly iridescent music.
