London-based producer Kevin Martin aka The Bug started his career in industrialmetal, but then swiftly converted to dubreggae and dancehall music. In his best moments,he pulls off a well-balanced synthesis of metal harshness and the rich tenderness of dub-inspired bass music; the same goes for his new album In Blue, which he recorded with the Berlin resident producer and singer Felicia Chen alias Dis Fig. Over the grinding rhythms and under the leaden reverb clouds of Martin, she sings with her eyes turned inward while her voice rages out. Perhaps you can think of this music as a brutalist version of trip-hop: Portishead, cast in concrete.
