SOUND

“I woke up in a fucked-up America,” sings Lonnie Holley on his new album Mith. He imparts the despair about resurging racism and chronicles its history: I Snuck Off the Slave Ship is the name of the main song on the work. Lonnie Holley was born 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama. He worked as a gravedigger and garbage man. At the end of the 1970s he started building massive sculptures out of garbage and other found items. His songs also sound like sculpted musical works, improvised and composed from history and present and the steadfast belief in a human future.
