The duo Duma provide the hardest high-velocity noise this donaufestival has to offer. Martin Khanja alias Lord Spike Heart and Sam Karugu deliver nerve-wracking guitar and synthesizer noise, the art of growling in best black metal fashion, but also nasty screeching overmodulated in the heights like old power electronics side by side with tribalistic drumming from African traditions. Duma come from Kenya’s capital Nairobi and are part of the flourishing East African metal scene, yet their debut album Duma was released on the more club music oriented Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes. Despite the apparent severity of their music, they are open and receptive – and their cosmopolitan musical chaos mirrors the chaotic globalisation in which we live.
