SOUND
Jenny Hval is one of the decade’s most incredible and adventurous vocalists. Having recorded ten albums to date, she uses her versatile soprano voice, which can switch registers in seconds, to tell of voyeuristic sex fantasies, Oedipal complexes, and amphibian androgyny. Together with the multi-instrumentalist Håvard Volden, she is now working on her new project Lost Girls – named after the sexually explicit graphic novel by Melinda Gebbie and Alan Moore about three fictional Victorian characters. Jenny Hval’s album Menneskekollektivet gives us dappled guitar sounds and jaunty rave beats: Curiously, the music seems programmed and improvised in equal measure, with Jenny Hval’s folky spoken word sections and radiant melodies drifting over the music.
