PERFORMANCE
Austrian premiere
workpiece is the portrait of a body that seems to adapt to the optimised workflows of robots in twitching, jerky movements. Based on her own work experience at a McDonald’s and the testimonies of other fast food restaurant employees, Lithuanian dancer Anna-Marija Adomaityte explores the physical and social conditions of surveilled productivity and its effects on the body. “I like my light green uniform, its collar and buttons up to my throat. When I wear it, I don’t feel my body ageing.”
Adomaityte’s scrutiny of performancedriven corporeality, bathed in a harsh spotlight, is reminiscent of both assembly line work and self-optimisation on a fitness studio treadmill. Her performance is accompanied by Gautier Teuscher’s live musical score, often a monotone pumping soundscape, which conjures the atmospheric grey zone between stress and overload.
