Omar Souleyman began his career as a wedding singer. In his native Syria, he was already a star since the 90s. In the noughties, Western audiences finally discovered his music, too – a frantic electronic version of the dabke dance from the Levantine region. He has performed on major festival stages and worked with Björk and Four Tet. On his latest album Shlon, he embraces dance music variations from all over the world: from traditional Egyptian baladi to Chicago footwork. At the most beautiful points, you suddenly fancy that you’re in an Ibiza disco on a sweltering night.
