Tunisian producer Deena Abdelwahed composes cosmopolitan club music. On her debut album Khonnar from 2018, she tried her hand at a fusion of traditional Arabic sounds with modern house and industrial beats. Jbal Rrsas is the name of her new work, which takes a big step further. Outdated dichotomies such as tradition and modernity have no meaning here. She intertwines tabla rhythms and booming 808 sounds into a brand-new footwork variation, devising EBM thrillers in which the “E” stands for “Egyptian.” On the dance floor, if nothing else, the world Deena Abdelwahed presents is boundless.
