On her latest album City of Clowns, created together with the electronic formation Soulwax, Marie Davidson draws inspiration from economist Shoshana Zuboff’s insights into surveillance capitalism. With cool, confrontational vocals over retrofuturistic techno and thundering alarm electro, the Canadian producer invokes a dystopian world of total digital control, inscribed in the background noise of our everyday lives. Davidson counters this terror with sarcastic sharpness and rebellious force in her pitch-black machine music: “All your asses on the floor.”
